British Rail Engineering Limited (BREL) was a subsidiary of the British Railways Board formed in 1970 to design, manufacture, and maintain rolling stock. It played a key role in the modernization of British Rail, developing new train technologies and working with both public and private sectors. BREL was eventually privatized and became part of ABB Transportation.

Established in 1970, BREL managed British Rail's workshops and took on the responsibility of designing, building, and maintaining trains.

BREL designed and manufactured new locomotives and carriages, worked with subcontractors, and collaborated with the British Railways Research Division.

BREL's work led to the development of iconic trains and significantly impacted British Rail's rolling stock.
Privatisation:
BREL was privatised in 1992 and became part of ABB Transportation.
