Piccadilly Radio 261 was Manchester's first Independent Local Radio (ILR) station. It initially broadcast on 261 meters (1152 kHz) on AM (MW) and 97.0 MHz on FM, with its studios based in Piccadilly Plaza overlooking Piccadilly Bus Station in the heart of Manchester city centre. Manchester’s inaugural Independent Local Radio station commenced its official broadcast at 5 am on Tuesday, April 2, 1974.

Key Milestones & Evolution

  • 1974: Officially begins broadcasting, playing a mix of music, news, and entertainment.

  • 1988: The station splits into two separate services:

    • Piccadilly Gold on 1152 AM (later rebranded as Piccadilly 1152, then Magic 1152, and now Greatest Hits Radio).

    • Piccadilly Radio 103 FM, later rebranded as Key 103 in 1988, catering to younger audiences.

  • 2021: The AM transmitter ceased operation on April 28, 2021
