Viking Radio (Hull) – History & Evolution

Viking Radio was a commercial radio station serving Kingston upon Hull, the East Riding of Yorkshire, North Lincolnshire, and North East Lincolnshire. It launched on April 17, 1984, becoming one of the first independent local radio stations in the UK.

Origins & Early Years (1984–1990s)

• Launched on April 17, 1984, Viking Radio started broadcasting from Commercial Road in Hull.

• The first words on air were spoken by Managing Director Roger Brooks, followed by the first song played: Celebration by Kool & The Gang.

• Viking Radio initially broadcasted on 102.7 FM and 258 metres (1161 kHz) medium wave.

Expansion & Network Growth (1990s–2000s)

• In 1994, the station split into two services:

  • Viking FM (96.9 FM) – Focused on current chart hits and entertainment.

  • Viking Gold (later Magic 1161 on AM) – Played classic hits for an older audience.

• The station was acquired by EMAP and later became part of Bauer Radio's network.

• Famous DJs & Presenters: Over the years, Viking Radio featured well-known radio voices, including:

  • Simon Logan

  • Darren Lethem

  • James Piekos (news reporting)

  • Dave Fewster

Move to Bauer Media & Format Changes (2010s–2020s)

• In 2013, Viking FM became part of Bauer's Hits Radio Network.

• In 2019, Viking FM's radio production moved to Sheffield, sharing studios with Hallam FM, though it retained some local programming.

• Magic 1161 (formerly Viking Gold) was merged into Greatest Hits Radio, ending the original AM heritage service.

Rebranding to Hits Radio (2024)

• On April 17, 2024, just before its 40th anniversary, Viking FM was rebranded as Hits Radio East Yorkshire & North Lincolnshire, following Bauer Media's decision to unify branding.

Legacy & Cultural Impact

• Viking Radio played a huge role in shaping radio culture in Hull and Yorkshire, being a key station for music, competitions, and local news.

• It hosted major events, charity drives, and notable guest interviews from pop stars like Peter Andre and Sean Maguire.

• Many listeners from the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s still associate Viking FM with its local identity and community engagement.
